<em>Steve,

Thanks for the comment, the great tip, and the book recommendation! Charting one's moods is a great way to see how one's emotions and actions are tied together. It can be very illuminating to discover what is really going on every day (let's not forget that what/when we eat and our sleep habits play a role in mood management too). This is important in how we lead our small businesses.

Thinking "happy" doesn't mean necessarily that you'll act happy but it might lead to another emotion. Happiness is a bit tricky anyway. Satisfaction, contentment, or pride (not arrogance) may be more sustaining in the long term. There is an interesting interaction between our thoughts, feelings, and actions. Any one of these areas can be a starting point and it is a choice to believe that one might have a different story now from the past.

Sound like you have made the choice to make everyday terrific! Bravo!

Outstanding post to bring out how the Napoleon Hill alibis can inhibit us with the fear factor and how letting our thoughts control actions is not a good thing.

Charting your moods for a 4-6 week period will allow you to discover a secret to allow you to master your moods, thoughts with positive action. A good read is Cycles The Mysterious Forces That Trigger Events. Some may call it mind control or some other name…but I want to be clear – actions control thoughts…it works. Example, if you act happy you feel happy. If you think happy you may not act happy.

For centuries we have been letting out thoughts control our actions. We were fortunate to have a great psychologist, William James ride into town proclaiming “your actions can control your thoughts.”

You can make everyday a terrific day; I begin everyday selecting terrific (BEST) as my action to control my thoughts. Converting to this process brings magic to the endeavors of business, life…transfer this secret to another is priceless…a true game changer!

<em>Ali,

Thanks for your comment! Great point about taking "imperfect action." We struggle sometimes with being "good enough" when oftentimes our "good enough" is excellent. I'm not talking about things being good enough and we can be lazy. There is never a perfect time, perfect information, or perfect choices. More like you said, encourage yourself to be okay with imperfect action.

Thanks for your wisdom!

Some real thought provokers here Elli. Your post reminded me of that saying:
"Take imperfect action"

And I think that is part of this whole dynamic you are talking about here. Perfectionism can be a big action stopper. Encouraging ourselves to be OK with taking imperfect action can be a helpful step in moving past inaction to getting stuck in.

<em>Brian,

There is a difference between acting impulsively because something sounds like a good idea and running a business. You nailed it! Taking the time to make sure the parachute is working, packed properly and all that is crucial. Same with taking action. Not all actions for one's business is life or death but all actions are better with a plan.

Lovely vision for success! Thanks for adding your thoughts to this chat!

Late to the party as usual, but here goes...

I believe it's only dangerous to take action when you haven't double-checked your safety gear. I'm all in favor of just going for it. The sooner you fail, the sooner you learn. You dust yourself off and press on, better for the experience.

Dad was right. It builds character.

Still, you don't just slam a Red Bull and jump out of the airplane sans parachute without first making damn sure the guy jumping out after you will be able to catch up to you, strap you in mid-air, and get you back down to terra firma in one piece. If you have faith in your support structure, you can do anything. See: Travis Pastrana skydiving without a parachute on Youtube. (Crazy.)

Success, to me, means inspiring others to act. You can be the best at telling time, but help the world tell time for itself when you're not around and you build a legacy.

Couldn't have said it better myself! Yes, vision is the compass. Momentum has a way of providing us with motivation and desire to continue on our path!

Row on!
