Great post. Love the analogy between drums and business.
It is all too easy for exceptionally good people to get stuck in a rut and hope that what got them to where they are right now will take them to the next level. For me it is really important that people actively step into the new role when it is time to move to the next level.

Duncan,
It is easy for exceptionally talented people to rely on what got them there in the first place. It seems that the risk lies in putting yourself in the beginner place again. The interesting part is that you get to bring all your abilities and successes with you. Simply, you change your mindset so you see with new eyes or even, hear with new ears.
